To all emerging artists: there will be people who won't take you seriously or give you the respect you deserve. (Especially if you’re young. Especially if you’re a young woman. Especially if you’re a young woman of color.) When you tell them that you're a writer or painter or guitarist, these people will RESPOND, “No; I mean, what Are you going to do as a real job?” There will be haters. They will try to bring you down. Throw that middle finger up, followed by the pointer, and peace out of any environment that has become toxic in this way.

Don't hang with people who don’t support you. Don't work for employers who disrespect you or neglect to compensate you fairly. Don’t doubt your abilities.

Above all, harness the power that comes from knowing your worth.
